Hello! Welcome to Tiny Harvest Farms, your source for locally grown microgreens. I’m Pauline, your tiny but mighty urban farmer. As history has shown us, achieving success requires effort and perseverance. Who knew microgreens would be no exception - testing my tenacity to its limits!
With a deep desire to grow my own nutrient rich food, I really had to dig in (pardon the pun), learn and grow myself in order to figure out how to grow these finicky little gems. Figuring out how to provide them for myself wasn’t an option.; My health was demanding that I embrace “eating green” as I have been plagued with unexplained hives, neuropathy, cold sores, mouth ulcers and joint pain for 3 years. I have been seen by 2 General Physicians, a Rheumatologist, an Allergist, a Neurologist, and explored many routes of alternative medicine with no clear answer. That is when I started to investigate my food sources. Driven by this necessity for a sustainable and pesticide-free food source, as well as a desire for anti-inflammatory options, I embarked on the successful journey of cultivating microgreens - finally.
In July of 2023, I harvested my first tray of Sunflowers. During a session with a holistic practitioner , and in an effort to explore activities that regulate the nervous system, she suggested I grow microgreens for resale - the seed was planted. By August I managed a five shelf unit in the spare bedroom on which we could grow 12 trays. We quickly outgrew the space and by September, I had moved the operation to our basement kitchen, and have four shelving units with a capacity to hold 48 trays of microgreens. We attended our first Farmers Market at the end of September, harvesting and selling 2500 grams of microgreens (13 trays). We are currently harvesting 12 trays every 10 days with an additional 12 trays germinating at the same time which are delivered shortly after harvest to our customers doorstep. Our most sought after microgreen is Broccoli with Pea Shoot, Sunflower, & Radish also topping the list. My favourite is a blend of Radish, Lentils & Pea Shoots (also known as Brilliant Blend) that make a delicious salad.
Microgreens are nature's nutritional powerhouses, and their journey from tiny seeds to superfoods is nothing short of remarkable. These miniature greens pack an extraordinary punch of flavor and nutrients, making them a popular choice for health-conscious individuals and culinary enthusiasts alike. The journey begins with the selection of high-quality seeds, followed by careful planting and nurturing in optimal conditions. As they sprout and grow, microgreens undergo a rapid transformation, developing vibrant colors, unique flavors, and an impressive concentration of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.
To reduce chance of spoilage due to moisture your microgreens have not been washed prior to packaging
With these simple steps, your microgreens will stay crisp and flavorful until you're ready to enjoy them in your favorite recipes.
It all starts with seed selection. We purchase high-quality seeds from reputable sources that specialize in sprouting seeds. They are stored in sealed containers and prior to planteing are soaked for 3-5 minutes in food grade hydrogen peroxide.
Each tray of microgreens is grown in fresh potting mix.
Greens are packaged in new 16 oz compostable containers.
Fans & a dehumidifier are used to control the climate that the microgreens are grown in.
If not properly dried and packaged, wet microgreens can become a breeding ground for bacteria and mold. This can increase the risk of foodborne illness and spoilage during storage and transportation. To reduce this risk the microgreens are not washed prior to packaging.
Harvested microgreens are stored in clean, airtight containers in the refrigerator. They are best consumed fresh, but if you need to store them, they can usually last a few days to a week when properly refrigerated.
